Underwater sculptor holds workshops in Townsville

04 September 2019

World-renowned sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor will hold a workshop with local artists and Indigenous representatives during his visit to Townsville.

The sculptor has returned to continue work on projects for the Strand, Palm Island and the ‘Coral Greenhouse’ installation on John Brewer Reef that will be a popular attraction for divers eager to interact with his artwork.

The 12-metre high Coral Greenhouse will be surrounded by sea-scaping, comprising nurseries and organic stems and is designed to be a liveable habitat for marine life.

Progress also continues the artist’s, ‘Ocean Siren’ sculpture that is planned to be installed later this year.

The five metre solar-powered sculpture of an Indigenous girl changes colour with the water temperature and uses data from atmospheric weather stations on the reef.

Townsville Student and proud Wulgurukaba girl Takoda Johnson was selected as the “muse’ for Ocean Siren. Installations for the third project at Palm Island are planned for mid to late 2020.
