Expanding national parks

Project overview

The Minjerribah Protected Area Expansion Strategy outlines how the island’s Traditional Custodians, the Quandamooka People, and the Queensland Government will work together to expand the national park and other protected areas.

Around half of Minjerribah is currently protected, including the Naree Budjong Djara (My Mother Earth) National Park and in the future, protected areas may be expanded to cover around 80 per cent of the island.

The strategy explains how the expansion will be undertaken in a staged approach:

  • short-term (6 months to 18 months from commencement)
  • medium-term (18 months to 5 years)
  • long-term (pending resources and funding).
