Refurbishment and bushfire protection of aged care

Project overview

The Nareeba Moopi Moopi Pa Aged Care Hostel (Moopi) located at Gumpi (Dunwich) is the only registered aged care facility on Minjerribah. The hostel is owned and operated by the North Stradbroke Island Aboriginal and Islander Housing Co-operative Society Ltd (NSI Housing Co-op).

As part of the Minjerribah Futures initiative, the Queensland Government provided funding to support the refurbishment and bushfire protection of the existing 14-bed facility. The Queensland Government’s Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning is leading this project in partnership with NSI Housing Co-op.

Practical completion for the refurbishment and bushfire protection construction was passed in early February 2022. The Australian Government also contributed to the refurbishment through Aged Care Approvals Round funding.

The department has also supported NSI Housing Co-op to:

  • develop a concept design for a new standalone 24-bed aged-care facility that will expand the existing aged care capacity to ensure more Indigenous and non-Indigenous people can stay on the island.
  • obtain a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (1 October 2020) for the expansion.
  • Provision of culturally appropriate aged care facilities.

In the early 1990s, dedicated people in the Minjerribah community came together to establish culturally appropriate aged care on the island. We acknowledge their hard work and this project continues their commitment.

Benefits
