Right to information

Accessing government information

The Queensland Government is committed to providing access to information held by the Government unless, on balance, it is contrary to the public interest to provide that information.

Legislation came into effect on 1 July 2009, namely:

Right to information aims to make more information available, provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community, and provide appropriate protection for individuals' privacy.

More information about right to information is available on the Queensland Government website.

Is the information you're looking for already available?

Our websites make it easy to access information about the department, our services, finances, policies, registers and lists, as well as information released under the RTI Act.

Check the following sites to see if information you’re looking for is already available:

You can also check with other areas of the department’s website that might have what you are looking for or contact us and we can help determine if the information is accessible.

Requesting information

We can often release non-personal information that is not sensitive or confidential, or your own personal information, without needing a formal RTI or IP application. This is called an ‘administrative release’.

Prior to lodging a request, we recommend contacting the Right to Information team on (07) 3452 6949 or email rti@dsdilgp.qld.gov.au to discuss the type of information you are requesting and whether it can be released administratively.

Where information is not already available or able to be released administratively, you can apply to access documents through a formal application under the Right to Information Act 2009 or Information Privacy Act 2009 (the IP Act) (whichever is applicable).

How to make an access application under the RTI or IP Act

If you need to make a formal application to access documents, you can seek access through one of the following options:

Information about the current fees and charges for applications under the RTI and IP Acts is available on the Queensland Government website.

How to amend your personal information in documents

Under the IP Act, you may apply to amend documents containing your personal information where you believe that the relevant information is inaccurate, misleading, out of date or incomplete. While there is no application fee, evidence of identity must be provided.

If you need to make a formal application to amend personal information, you can seek amendment by downloading an Information Privacy Personal Information Amendment Application form and submitting a completed form to the department by email, post or in person as follows:

Visit the RTI and Information Privacy website to find out more about your rights to amend personal information held by the government.
