Queensland Small Business Champion
Maree Adshead has been appointed Queensland’s first Small Business Champion.
Maree is driven to ensure that small business interests are a focal point of policy and program design. Under her leadership as founding CEO of the Open Data Institute Queensland both Maree and the institute have been recognised as leaders in bringing business, industry, academia and government together to utilise government data as a strategic resource.
Maree’s career began in the legal profession, as partner of a tier one national law firm. Ten years later, she co-founded a successful software start-up which received multiple awards for excellence in innovation.
In 2012 Maree received the prestigious Women in Technology ICT Outstanding Achievement Award which recognises the achievements of outstanding women within Queensland’s ICT industries and was the 2015 Patron of TechGirls are Superheroes.
Maree has had industry roles including establishing and chairing the Technology Council of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ) and chair of the Queensland branch of the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA).
As the inaugural Queensland Small Business Champion, Maree is playing an active role in voicing the needs of small businesses to ensure they have the best chance to start, grow and employ.
The establishment of the Queensland Small Business Champion is another way the Queensland Government is strengthening the support for small business.
The role of the Queensland Small Business Champion
The Queensland Small Business Champion listens to the views of small business and ensures they are heard by government. Importantly, the Queensland Small Business Champion represents Queensland at national meetings so Queensland has input into the national small business agenda.
Under the Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy 2016-20, the Queensland Government is committed to making Queensland the place for small business to start, grow and employ. The Queensland Small Business Champion is strengthening connections across government and with key stakeholders for greater collaboration, knowledge sharing and delivery of programs.
The Queensland Small Business Champion’s work includes:
- representing Queensland small business at the national level by attending inter-jurisdictional meetings
- advocating for small business as a Member of the Queensland Small Business Advisory Council
- providing advice to the Queensland Government on regulation issues concerning small business as Chair of the Better Regulation Taskforce.
