Queensland Small Business Champion

The Queensland Small Business Champion role was established under the Advancing Small Business Queensland Strategy 2016-20 to provide a voice for Queensland small business and act as an interface between the Queensland and Australian Governments.

Ms Maree Adshead is Queensland's inaugural Small Business Champion.

The Queensland Small Business Champion’s role

The Queensland Small Business Champion advocates for Queensland small businesses at the state and national level.

The Queensland Small Business Champion gives voice to the challenges and needs of the approximately 426,000 small businesses in Queensland and ensures they are brought to the forefront of government policy and decision-making. The role complements existing industry advocacy bodies and provides them with a better link to government.

The Queensland Small Business Champion’s work includes:

  • contributing to the national small business agenda as member of the National Small Business Commissioners network
  • acting as an interface between the Queensland and Australian Governments on matters affecting Queensland small businesses
  • advocating on behalf of small businesses to the Queensland Government.

Maree Adshead’s story

Maree’s career began in the legal profession, as partner of a tier one national law firm.

Ten years later, she co-founded a successful software start-up which received multiple awards for excellence in innovation.

More recently, as founding CEO of the Open Data Institute Australian Network, both Maree and the institute have been recognised as leaders in bringing business, industry, academia and government together to use government data as a strategic resource.

As the inaugural Small Business Champion, Maree plays an active role in advocating for the vibrant Queensland small business community to ensure they have the best chance to start, grow and employ.
