Indicative project timeline

The indicative Project Timeline for the Wangetti Trail Project is as follows:

• Q2 2018: Feasibility: Queensland Government announced its support of the Wangetti Trail, a proposed dual-use track in Far North Queensland stretching along the coastal plains and mountain hinterland between Palm Cove and Port Douglas
• Q2 to Q4 2018: Business Case: Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games developed Business Case, with leading local trail design and construction company World Trail appointed to design the alignment in July
• Q3 to Q4 2018: Walk Through and Engineering Design: World Trail completed walk through of the trail and engineering design of the alignment, working closely with Traditional Owners, specialist consultants and engineers
• March 2019: Mowbray North Announcement: Queensland Government announces $5.7 million investment to complete the seven kilometre ‘Mowbray North’ component (Port Douglas south to the Mowbray River) of the Wangetti Trail, with construction scheduled to commence in Q4 2019
• 8 April 2019: Trail Alignment and Community Engagement Announcement: Detailed alignment of Wangetti trail released for public comment
• 8 April to 31 May 2019: The community invited to find out more and share their views via Social Pinpoint and community engagement activities
• June to July 2019: Registration of Interest: Tourism Operators who wish to be considered, including demonstrated track record in delivering world-class, ecotourism experiences to register interest
• 2019: Expression of Interest Stage: Tourism Operators with a demonstrated track record in delivering world-class, ecotourism experiences to express interest
• July 2019: Mowbray River bridge tender released: works will include a new pedestrian bridge, pedestrian underpass, viewing platform and demolition of the redundant Captain Cook Highway bridge substructure
• Q1/Q2 2020: Request for Detailed Proposal: Shortlisted proponents from the EOI stage invited to further develop concepts and proposals, including confirmed commercial arrangements with Traditional Owners
• Q2 2020: Anticipated Federal Government approvals granted
• Q3/Q4 2020: Preferred Proponent: The successful proponent will be selected and binding terms negotiated
• 2021: Development and Construction: Design plan finalised and construction underway. A range of community benefits delivered immediately including construction jobs
• 2022: Wangetti Trail Operational: Trail operational and open to the public*
